According to his stories, Yamane gets up every morning at 5 a.m. to climb a nearby mountain from where he enjoys the sunrise and then go about his craft until the evening. For Yamane, not only the end product but also the creative process is crucial, possibly the daily ascent of the mountain is the inspiration of both his deep blue glazes, which correspond to the dawn, and the colors of his brightly colored glazes, which may be inspired by the rising sun. His physical and mental training in the morning also underlines his ambitions as a master of karate art.

Renowned Hagi potter Seigan, celebrated for his signature “Seigan Blue,” has created this white cup with a thick, flowing white glaze over brick-red Hagi-yaki clay, a hallmark of traditional Hagi ware. Born in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, in 1952, he first pursued a career in martial arts.

In 1972, he trained in Kyokushin Kaikan, Shorinji Kempo, and Ashihara-kaikan of the New International Karate Organization. In 1974, he founded his own Karate school, where he continues to serve as master.

In 1987, he chose to devote his life to pottery, spending a full year building his own kiln by hand. In 1990, he presented his work at the 3rd Hagi-ware Festival on the recommendation of Yoshida Hagi-en Chokumon, where it was very well received. He went on to participate in the festival 13 times and established his own kiln, Kousaian.

In 1998, he held a solo exhibition at the Konpuan gallery in Kuga. In 2001, he exhibited at the Yamaboushi gallery in Hagi. In 2003, he held a joint exhibition with Ms. Yoko Yu in Yamaguchi, followed by a solo exhibition at the Shinto gallery in Kobe.
